Swapping a light fixture is one of the few home projects where the labor often costs more than the thing being installed. That makes it a good candidate for DIY, but only in some situations.

DIY figures assume you own a ladder and basic tools. Hired figures assume a licensed electrician with a minimum service call, typically $75–$150 before any work.
Why the hired price looks high for a simple swap
Almost every electrician has a minimum charge. If a fixture swap takes twenty-five minutes, you are still paying the minimum. This is why the smartest move is batching: if you have four fixtures to change, get them all done in one visit. Four swaps rarely cost four times one swap, and are often closer to double.
When DIY genuinely makes sense
A like-for-like swap on an existing junction box, at a reachable height, is a legitimate beginner project. You need a non-contact voltage tester ($15–$25, not optional), a screwdriver set and wire strippers, wire nuts, and a second person if the fixture is heavy or awkward.
The procedure: kill the breaker, test with the voltage tester, note how the existing wires connect and photograph it, disconnect, mount the new bracket, connect like to like, secure, restore power.
The photo of the original wiring is the single most useful step. It has saved more DIY projects than any tool.
When to call an electrician
Stop and hire out if you find any of these:
- No ground wire, common in older homes and a sign the circuit may need attention
- Cloth-insulated or brittle wiring, usually pre-1960s, which crumbles when disturbed
- Aluminum branch wiring, silver-colored, mostly 1965–1973, which requires specific connectors and is a real fire risk if handled wrong
- A box that wiggles, or a fan being hung from a box not rated for fans
- Ceilings above about twelve feet
- Any new switch leg, dimmer compatibility problem, or added circuit
- Any doubt at all after the power is off
Also check your local rules. Some jurisdictions permit homeowner electrical work on a primary residence; others require a licensed electrician and a permit for anything beyond a direct swap. Rental properties are frequently stricter.
Hidden costs people forget
- Dimmer compatibility. LED fixtures and older dimmers often produce flicker or buzz. Budget $20–$40 for a compatible dimmer.
- Ceiling patching. A new fixture with a smaller canopy exposes the old paint ring. Add paint and time.
- Fan-rated boxes. A standard box will not safely hold a ceiling fan. Replacing it is the real work in most fan installs.
- Disposal. Old fluorescent tubes and ballasts have disposal rules in many areas.
The calculation that actually matters
Take the difference between DIY and hired, divide by the hours involved, and decide whether that hourly rate is worth your Saturday.
A flush-mount swap saves maybe $150 for an hour of work. Reasonable. A recessed lighting install saves a great deal more on paper and takes a competent amateur an entire weekend with a real chance of cutting into a joist or a cable. Less reasonable.
Track what you actually paid
National averages are a starting point. Your numbers are better. After a few logged jobs you know what your electrician charges, what the call-out minimum is, whether he discounts batched work, and how long each job actually takes in your house. That turns the next decision from a guess into arithmetic.
